Siddamulla, Sri Lanka — The 1333 Crisis Support Line (CCCline) team recently conducted a one-day communication skills workshop at Siddamulla Madduma Bandara Primary School, bringing together parents and children for a programme focused entirely on strengthening how families talk to and understand one another.
An Invitation Rooted in a Real Need
The workshop came about following an invitation from the school's principal, who identified a clear need within the school community: a dedicated programme to help build stronger communication between parents and their children. Good communication within the family is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for supporting a child's emotional well-being, and it was this idea that shaped the entire day.
A Programme Designed in Two Parts
To make the most of the day, the workshop was thoughtfully divided into two interactive sessions:
First Half — Parents Only: A focused, interactive session designed to help parents better understand communication skills, how they show up in family life, and how small shifts in the way they speak and listen can make a meaningful difference at home.
Second Half — Parents and Children Together: Building on the first session, parents and children came together for a shared, interactive experience — giving families a chance to practise open, supportive communication side by side.
This two-part structure allowed the 1333 team to first equip parents with the right tools, and then create a safe space for them to put those tools into practice together with their children.
Meet the Team Behind the Programme
The workshop was delivered by a dedicated team from CCC Foundation: Mrs. Jayani, Mrs. Dinesha, Mrs. Deepika, Mrs. Probodha, and Mr. Ramith. Their combined effort made the day both highly interactive and genuinely engaging for everyone who took part, from the youngest students to their parents.
Why Communication Skills Matter
Strong communication within families plays a vital role in supporting children's mental well-being. Workshops like this one help:
Parents recognise and improve their own communication habits
Children feel more comfortable expressing themselves at home
Families build trust through open, judgement-free conversation
Schools and communities create a stronger foundation for emotional well-being
